VISIT

My first visit to the Mercado de San Miguel was one late morning, December 2017. Despite how cold it was, people were crowded around the different puestos (stands), desperately catching any server's attention for some warm food.  I have been to markets in the past back at home, but nothing like this one.  I was so mesmerized at the setup...where to start? What to eat and drink?

At the far side of the market, I saw a bartender pouring white sangria from a large dispenser.  The drink's color resembled orange juice with chunks of fruit floating on top.  It was one of those "I must have this" moments.  And as soon as the glass touched my lips and the beautifully balanced juice and wine went down my throat, I instantly knew this sangria puts any ones I had in the past to shame.

This was also the first time I experienced tapas.  I have seen many television shows highlighting these delicious, small savory dishes.  Friends and families have praised the simplicity of ham or shrimp on a crispy toast. But to be standing in one of these magical markets, I felt like a little kid in a candy store. It was the excitement of something new.  Tasting flavors I have never tasted before.  After I devoured several of the bite sized treats, it hit me!  "Hey, I am in Madrid! I am actually eating tapas!" This was something so special, that it should be on everyone's bucket list to experience.

Mercado de San Miguel is a unique indoor market where you can sample all the Spanish specialties under one roof.  Order some patatas bravas and sangria at one stand and then migrate to the next one and try their tortilla de patatas and cava.  They have such a wide selection of savory and sweet food items.  You are bound to find something you like.  I returned here in June and it was just as crowded as it was in the winter.  What remained the same was how refreshing the white sangria was, a perfect drink to beat the summer heat.  And I didn't mind the same delicious tapas that accompanied with it.
