VISIT

To be honest, history is not something that gets me excited.  I much rather spend time sampling local cuisine than being stuck in line, just to observe a monument for a few seconds.  But I absolutely understand and appreciate the importance of each city's history.  One thing I can say is that I do admire art.

Both Jackie and I grew up doodling on the side of our notebooks.  We have even painted several canvases of our own "masterpieces"  in our teenage and college years.  Our appreciation for art started at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Barnes Foundation.  I consider these two establishments staples of the "City of Brotherly Love."  You can learn so much history by just looking at a painting.  That is why whenever we travel, we make an effort to visit a local museum.  So if we had to choose one "tourist spot" in Madrid, it would have to be Museo Reina Sofia.

Established in 1992, this museum houses some of the best masterpieces of Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí.  They have over 21,000 art works, including Picasso's famous painting Guernica.  Believe it or not, the building used to be an 18th century hospital.  No longer a medical institution, the museo has 2 auditoriums, a library, restaurants, a bookstore, administrative offices and a beautiful courtyard.  And with over 100,000 books, more than 3,500 sound recordings and nearly 1,000 videos, it will keep art lovers occupied for hours.  It is truly one of a kind museum.  So when you're in Madrid, get your Ferris Bueller gazing on at the Museo Reina Sofia.
