Once upon a time in Spain, tapas was referred to as covering wine glasses with slices of bread or meat to prevent bugs from flying in drinks.  It's now known as those marvelous appetizers you see behind the glass display.  But it's much more than a couple slices of hamon on bread.  It is a social activity: bar hopping to one place after another to try each one's unique small portion snacks.  It's what you do after a hard day's work.  The Spaniards know how to live and play.  What we love about Madrid is ordering a beer or wine automatically grants you a small bowl of olives, or homemade meatballs if you are in the right place!  Calle de Jesus has a bunch of amazing bars and restaurants.  We laid out 5 places where you can start your first "tapas crawl." ¡Vamos de tapas! Let's go for tapas!

La Esquina

At the corner of Calle de las Huertas and Calle de Jesus is the cozy bar that serves excellent tinto de vernos, as well as gin and tonics.  Plus they give you a nice bowl of olives with your drinks!

Calle de las Huertas, 70, 28014 Madrid, Spain

El Diario

Opened in 1879, it retains the charm and character of old Madrid.  They serve arguably the best Sangria by the pitcher.  The amount of free tapas they provide with drinks is absolutely worth it.

Calle de las Huertas, 69, 28014 Madrid, Spain

Los Gatos

You'll instantly notice the unusual decor through out the restaurant.  This cerveceria has a nice variety of tostadas (toasted bread with toppings like baby eels, smoked salmon and shrimp).

Calle de Jesús, 2, 28014 Madrid, Spain

Cervezas la Fabrica

A nice local bar that serves the usual beer and wine.  The wooden barrels as high tops bring a nice rustic look to the place.  Don't be frightened by their buckets of octopus on display.  They are known for their seafood!

Calle de Jesús, 2, 28014 Madrid, Spain

La Dolores

This vintage bar dates back to 1908.  They are known for their reasonably priced sandwiches or canapes.  Come early, as it gets crowded quickly.
